Professor Ballon Receives Prestigious APA Planning Award

Hilary Ballon, Professor of Urban Studies and Architecture, has won the William H. Whyte Award, which is given annually by the American Planning Association's New York Metro Chapter to an individual, plan, or project that is distinguished by creativity in the field of planning. Dr. Ballon was honored on June 16, 2008, at the APA Chapter's annual meeting at the New York Historical Society for her major exhibition, "Robert Moses and the Modern City."

Professor Paul Light authors new book on the Federal Service, 'A Government Ill-Executed'

Paul Light, Paulette Goddard Professor of Public Service at NYU Wagner, has written a timely and compelling new book, "A Government Ill-Executed: The Decline of the Federal Service and How to Reverse It." The book is receiving a raft of attention and plaudits from the media, and was the focus of a special event June 9, 2008, at the National Academy of Public Administration in Washington, D.C., with introductory remarks delivered by former Senator Tom Daschle. NAPA cosponsored the event -- attended by more than 65 people -- with NYU's Brademas Center for the Study of Congress, housed at Wagner. Among the public attention the book has received is a live web discussion; Light was invited by the Washington Post to participate in it (click below).

New Report Examines U.S. Incarceration Rate

U.S. Conference of Mayors President Trenton Mayor Douglas Palmer, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, NYU Wagner Dean Ellen Schall and many other experts, officials and practitioners joined in a daylong workshop Feb. 28, 2008 to grapple with the issue of mass incarceration and prisoner relapse and its impact on urban communities. In May of 2008, Public/Private Ventures produced a report stemming from the meeting, entitled "From Options to Action: A Roadmap for City Leaders to Connect Formerly Incarcerated Individuals to Work." Alumnus Wins National Public Service Award

NYU Wagner alumnus David Smith (MPA, '76) has won a prestigious 2008 National Public Service Award from the American Society of Public Administration (ASPA) and the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) for excellence in public service at all levels of government. Smith is the County Administrator, Maricopa County, Arizona.

ASPA and NAPA established the National Public Service Awards in 1983 to honor individuals whose accomplishments are models of sustained public service within and outside the work environment.

Professor Anthony Kovner Discusses Forthcoming Book, 'The Practice of Evidence-Based Management'

NYU Wagner Professor Anthony R. Kovner's  forthcoming book, "The Practice of Evidence-Based Management," with David Fine and Richard D'Aquila, will be published this year by Health Administration Press. The volume includes 14 case studies commissioned by the authors on management interventions in healthcare organizations using an evidence-based approach.

Dr. Kovner is Professor of Public and Health Management at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University.
